Kind of Blue

Lately, I've been feeling kind of blue. Not sad, just in love with blue rooms. Particularly those in darker, moodier hues, and those employing pattern and texture. Here are a few blue rooms that are currently inspiring me.

Design Inspiration: Black and White

I already highlighted some black and white Halloween decor options in a post earlier this month, but the classic combination works in any season and with any style of decor. No matter what the occasion or situation you can rarely go wrong with a good black and white graphic print. If you are looking to up the drama in a room, make it entirely black and white. For a more modern and playful feel, try mixing black and white pieces with brightly colored ones.

House Mouse

Shopping for a new home can be tough, double that when your being super picky about the part of town you want. James (the husband) and  I are looking at two family homes in South City. We actually just made an offer on one, and I am very excited. Whether or not this one works out for us, it's nice to feel like we finally have the ball rolling after months of fruitless house hunting. Now that I have a place in mind, I feel like its ok to start planning out my decorating ideas.

Interior Design Inspiration: Suspiria

I feel like someone flipped a switch, and now everything I see or hear is Thanksgiving-related. And while I love Thanksgiving a lot, I might even say it's my favorite holiday, I'm not quite ready to let Halloween go yet. As a follow-up to my previous horror movie inspiration post, I want to focus on the gorgeous interiors of Dario Argento's creepy classic, Suspiria.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Suspiria is color, which isn't a surprise given that it was apparently one of the last films to use Technicolor and was somewhat inspired by Disney's Snow White. The primary (no pun intended) colors of the film are red and blue, with dashes of pink, purple, and green. Stained glass windows and other architectural elements also play a large part in the movie's unique atmosphere.

You can't talk about Suspiria without mentioning wallpaper. Almost every scene features the most unusual patterns in the background. Here are a few that mimic the feel of the ones in the film.

Interior Design Inspiration: Halloween Edition

Looking for a way to get into the Halloween spirit on a school/work night without having to leave the house? I am planning to revisit a few of my favorite horror movies for some interior design inspiration. Trust me, it's not all blood and guts. Some of them are as notable for their looks as they are for their spooks:

Suspiria (1977) has the most creepily colorful interiors ever. 

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) is all about jagged curves, and I'm not  just talking about the *SPOILER ALERT* twist ending. 

The hotel in The Shining (1980) has a really cool minty green Art Deco bathroom...too bad about the evil ghosts.

This tablescape from Pan's Labyrinth (2006) is a great example of how decor can provide a welcome distraction from unattractive guests.

I've always really liked the taxidermy-filled sitting room in Psycho (1960), but I wouldn't use the shower.

Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby (1968) finds it hard to leave her cozy Manhattan apartment, and who could blame her? 

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Rosemary's Baby are currently streaming on Netflix. The Shining, Psycho, and Pan's Labyrinth are available for streaming on Amazon. Suspiria is harder to track down, but totally worth it. Check your local video store.
